Winter might still be skulking around the corner, sending out the occasional snow storm or arctic chill, but it's only a matter of time before spring greets us and brings with it sunny days and warmer temperatures. After the horribly snowy Michigan winter, that's definitely good news for you — but it might not be for your energy bill.
As the days and nights get warmer, many of us will begin to turn on air conditioners to help keep our homes cool and comfortable. This can result in high electricity bills, which will only climb as the days get even hotter. If you're concerned about the burden this season might put on your budget, these steps can help you out:
- Replace your AC filter: Air conditioning units have air filters that trap dust and dirt before it can enter your home. As more particles accumulate, the unit has to work hard to suck in air to cool, which uses up more energy. Replacing AC filters regularly ensures that your unit is operating efficiently.
- Go easy on the thermostat: Walking into your house after a day in the hot sun, your first step is probably the AC, and it's likely that you crank it up as high as it can go. Unfortunately setting your thermostat at a colder setting than normal doesn't actually help cool your home faster, and it may even result in excessive energy consumption.
- Install 3M window film: Window film is a great way to keep your house cool. 3M film works by blocking out the sun's heat from your windows, and can reduce cooling costs by up to 30 percent.
