Window films: A smart solution for schools

Michigan schools are in need of cost-effective solutions to improve security and reduce utility costs. One way to meet security and budget goals is to install window films. An effective and inexpensive option is 3M Safety Film. Having been incorporated into more than 200 U.S. schools since March 2013, there are several reasons for the film's popularity.  For one, it can be easily applied, including over existing glazing. Additionally, though not fool-proof, it can act as a deterrent against would-be intruders. Finally, the films are energy efficient, in compliance with new standards in many states.

There are three kinds of safety and security window film that are especially effective for security purposes:

  • Ultra Series S600 – good for strong, tear-resistance
  • Safety Series S140 – manages to hold broken glass together so windows don't shatter
  • Impact Protection Attachment Systems – bonds the filmed window to the frame. This option offers the greatest level of protection when coupled with another safety film

The window films are also affordable. Window film is seven to 10 times less expensive than installing new windows, reports 3M. While the exact price depends on size, it ranges from $100 to $1,000 for a very large window.

Window films offer yet another benefit: Energy-efficiency. In addition to being good for the environment, School Construction News explains that window films are an affordable "green" option, especially compared to alternatives.

Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association (IWFA), also suggests that window films are ideal for schools on a tight schedule since "Installation only takes one day [after school] and does not disrupt classes."
